The Winnipeg Jets Have A New Logo… Sort Of.

This is the new logo set designed for the revamped Winnipeg Jets hockey franchise. Their website calls their logo (in particular, the roundel on the left),”inspired by the logo of the Royal Canadian Air Force”.

This is the current roundel for the RCAF:

You can certainly see the similarities.

Don’t get me wrong, I am totally on board with their spirit of honouring the RCAF and I think the other two logos in the set (the ones to the left of the roundel), are pretty successful - the top one specifically. But as an effective logo, I just can’t get on board with its’ ability to be easily recognized. Case in point, go to the Winnipeg Jets website and look at the favicon, now go to the RCAF website and look at theirs. See the difference? Muddled versus clean.

Now, that certainly is a tiny image and the argument can be made that no one will ever see the Jets logo that small (I can only assume they won’t have pens printed with the roundel), but the point I am trying to make is that regardless of what the image may or may not be used for, it should be prepared in such a way that it will be easily recognized in any contingency.

I will be interested to see how the roundel translates to an actual game (televised or live), and if the jet and the maple leaf can be visually separated from the pointy blob it currently is.
